2、ng research hasconsistently found a word knowledge factor an which vocabulary tests Ioad highly. The present study mainly investigated the relationship between vocabulary size,specific vocabulary knowledge and readin
3、g comprehension in Chinese EFL setting.The results show that the Vocabulary Levels Test can predict vocabulary size inChinese EFL setting and it is a more reliable test and can make finer distinctionswithin the group com
4、pared with the traditional vocabulary size test in Chineseresearch. Moreover, the correlation between VLT and reading comprehension isltigher than that of scares on traditional vocabulary size test and reading. It is fou
5、ndthat the correlations among specific voca}nlary knowledge, vocabulary size and:jading comprehension are very high. But specific vocabulary knowl}rlge adds anoficeable prediction in reading comprehension over and above
6、the prediction alreadyafforded by vocabulary size. The additional prediction can be explained by the abilityto infer from the context, activating content schemata and the knowledge of polysemyof the words. It is also fou
7、nd that learners often overestimate their understanding ofwords. The mismatch is due to learners' unawareness of an unknown word andpolysemy of the words. The words with similar forms and with a deceptivemorphological st
8、ructure are especially difficult for the learners to learn. Since vocabulary knowledge扭ays an important role in reading performance, theuse of a dictionary to increase comprehension seems to have rational appeal. How
9、ever,the previous research provided the contradictory findings. Attracted by the widespreaduse of electronic dictionaries and motivated by the contradictory findings, thedictionary use during reading was also investigate
10、d in the present study to comparewith the findings of the previous research. The results show that the. access to abilingual electronic dictionary has a significant effect on the reading scores for both high proficiency
11、b oup and low proFciency b oup. It is due to quick access toelectronic dictionaries and relatively Limited control of vocabulary in English_ It isalso found that dictionary use largely helped with the microprocessing of
