1、詞匯在語(yǔ)言運(yùn)用的過(guò)程中占有舉足輕重的地位,語(yǔ)言使用者的聽(tīng)力、口語(yǔ)、閱讀、寫(xiě)作以及翻譯的水平在很大的程度上都取決于其對(duì)詞義的掌握。詞義研究一直是語(yǔ)言學(xué)中的重要內(nèi)容。傳統(tǒng)的詞義研究主要從歷史的角度考察詞義變化的類(lèi)型、過(guò)程和原因;現(xiàn)代的詞義研究以結(jié)構(gòu)主義理論為指導(dǎo)思想,主要研究共時(shí)關(guān)系中詞與詞之間的意義關(guān)系以及如何把詞義向更微觀的方向進(jìn)行解剖;從認(rèn)知角度出發(fā)的詞義研究更加注重人的大腦的認(rèn)知特點(diǎn)和方法對(duì)詞義構(gòu)成和詞義變化的影響。通過(guò)相關(guān)文獻(xiàn)的回
2、顧與梳理,我們不難發(fā)現(xiàn)現(xiàn)有研究中很少有學(xué)者關(guān)注一個(gè)詞的詞長(zhǎng)對(duì)其意義的影響。
因此,基于經(jīng)濟(jì)原則及隱喻和轉(zhuǎn)喻理論,本文大膽假設(shè):一個(gè)詞的詞長(zhǎng)對(duì)其承載的意義量有制約作用,并且詞長(zhǎng)與其承載的詞義量大體上應(yīng)呈反比關(guān)系,即詞長(zhǎng)越長(zhǎng),詞承載的意義量就越少,而詞長(zhǎng)越短,詞承載的意義量就鷓多。筆者選取大學(xué)英語(yǔ)詞匯(共7675個(gè)詞)作為語(yǔ)料來(lái)源,從詞義分布、詞長(zhǎng)分布以及詞義和詞長(zhǎng)的關(guān)系三方面對(duì)其中5579個(gè)多義詞進(jìn)行了量化分析,結(jié)果發(fā)現(xiàn):<
3、br> n)多義詞的平均詞長(zhǎng)為2.1個(gè)音節(jié),所承載的平均詞義量為4.6個(gè)意義;
(2)多數(shù)多義詞(98%)的詞長(zhǎng)分布在1到4個(gè)音節(jié)之間,只有少部分多義詞(2%)詞長(zhǎng)大于4個(gè)音節(jié);
(3)多數(shù)多義詞(94%)承載的意義量分布在2到10個(gè)意義之間,只有少部分多義詞(6%)承載的意義量大于11個(gè);
(4)隨著詞長(zhǎng)的增加,詞匯所承載的最大詞義量和平均詞義量都逐漸下降;

4、承載詞義量的增加,平均詞長(zhǎng)逐漸下降,當(dāng)詞義量小于5時(shí),雙音節(jié)詞占大部分,而當(dāng)詞義量大于5時(shí),單音節(jié)詞占大部分;且當(dāng)詞義量大于16個(gè)意義時(shí),所有的多義詞都是單音節(jié)詞。
研究得出的結(jié)果驗(yàn)證了基本假設(shè)的同時(shí),對(duì)大學(xué)英語(yǔ)詞匯教學(xué)也有著非常重要的意義。對(duì)于教師而言,此項(xiàng)研究提醒他們?cè)谠~匯教學(xué)時(shí),重點(diǎn)應(yīng)放在對(duì)常用單音節(jié)詞和雙音節(jié)詞的意義的講解而不是那些意義不豐富的多音節(jié)詞;對(duì)于學(xué)生而言,此項(xiàng)研究可以幫助他們調(diào)整詞匯學(xué)習(xí)策略,快速掌握英
