2、mes more and more frequent. Hence intercultural communication accompanying international connection becomes increasingly important. As a key factor, interpersonal relationship which affects intercultural communication ca

3、n’t be ignored at the same time. Interpersonal relationships are affected by different cultures, and different rules confining the development of interpersonal relationships. Usually, the problem of interperson

4、al relationship can decide whether the cross-cultural interacting will succeed or not. So it is necessary to research it profoundly, and distinguish these differences from the different cultures.Of course, there

5、are several scholars who had already researched on interpersonal relationships in intercultural communication. For instance, Steve J. Kulich and Michael H. Prosser edited Intercultural Perspectives on Chinese Communica

6、tion which mainly discusses the relationship of Chinese in intercultural communication, and focused on the different cultural perspectives in intercultural communication. Linell Davis’s book Doing culture----Cross

7、-cultural Communication in Action mentioned that the relationships among friends, teachers and students in cross-cultural communication. Both of them didn’t pay attention to strangers. This thesis systemically

8、analyses and lists the differences of interpersonal relationship in intercultural communication.Ⅱ. Definition of Intercultural Communication and Interpersonal RelationshipA. Definition of Intercultural CommunicationAs t

9、o the definition of intercultural communication, different peoples have different ideas. In this thesis, the author adopts Larry A Samovar and Richard E Porter’s opinion that intercultural communication occurs wh

10、en a member of one culture produces a message for consumption by a member of another culture. More precisely, intercultural communication involves interaction between people whose cultural perceptions and symbol systems

11、are distinct enough to alter the communication event.1The same thing seems to never happen in western family. In western culture, Westerner’s self-actualization and the maximal realization of individual potential are sup

12、reme aims in life.6 The pursuit of individual rights and interests is considered utterly legitimate. In their theory, they should achieve both financial and emotional independence from their parents as early as possible.

13、 Job hunting is considered as absolutely private thing, family members seldom involve at such king of things. Children are expected to take care of themselves, solve their own problems and “stand on their own

14、feet”. Next two points are worthy of putting out. Firstly, westerners seldom talk about private problems, even between unclear family members. Such as job hunting, salary and marriage are completely belong to one

15、’s own thing, it’s none of the family member’s business. Secondly, even between family members, they use polite form after receive help. Chinese rarely do that, for the collectivistic culture, they take that help or r

16、eceive help among each other for granted. The individualistic culture lays emphasis on egalitarianism, where even in the family, independence is highly valued.2. Extended Family MembersThe extended family refers to the f

17、amily in which two or more generations living together. Usually, Chinese think both extended family members and nuclear family members as family members. In their mind, the primary responsibility of a person is to advanc

18、e the family as a group either socially, or economically, and to bring honor to the family name. In Chinese culture, family members depend on each other more than westerners, and families are built around the

19、 value of interdependence. But for westerner, the extended family members are only relatives. They feel little responsibility toward each other, and may never even meet in all their lives. In their societies,

20、 the extended family members are the main financial and emotional support for people in times of crisis. In western culture, the nuclear family is much more important to individuals than the extended family. The followin

21、g story will prove the difference between them.A Chinese girl Li Jie studies in America and shares a room with an American girl Linda in the dormitory. They like each other and get along well with each other. One day Li

22、Jie’s second cousin came and shared the bed with her. Two weeks past, the cousin was still there, since she did not bring enough money, Li Jie paid for all her daily fee without any complaint which made Linda very ang

23、ry. She said: “Li Jie, it is not fair to be treated like this way. Your cousin is taking advantage of you, using your time and money like this. I think you should tell her that you have your own life to live.
