1、This paper views the translation of ancient Chinese poetry from a cultural perspective and tries to treat cultural image as a special item within the field of translation. Considerations on the trend of translation studi
2、es introduce the topic of culture, and the introduction of the two terms "image" and "cultural image" leads the paper to its theme. The conclusion from the current research on the translation of cultural images justifies
3、 the theoretical orientation of the thesis, that is, the preference of the alienation methodology. The thesis identifies, through examining a range of different translations, the importance of the correct understanding o
4、f the cultural images, and , in particular, the sensitivities needed to respond to the possibilities of the loss and distortion of cultural image in translation. It follows from this predicament, that a consistent as wel
5、l as practical system of strategies should be worked out to deal with the specific problems. In an effort to give a comprehensive analysis of the cultural image perspective incorporated in the translation, the paper cite
6、s a range of concrete examples and gives a detailed analysis of their strong points and weak points. Some strategies that help to achieve successful transmission of cultural images are provided. They are in accordance wi
7、th the broader theory about the translation of all the cultural factors, though there exists palpable disagreement within the field as to the practicalities of adaptation, which is mainly characterized by the tug-of-war
8、 between alienation and adaptation as is analyzed in Chapter 3, where the various levels of alienation and adaptation are adaptation, the strategies offered are more inclined to the alienation school, because only throug
9、h this way can the novel images in the SL culture be introduced to the TL culture and enrich it. The paper consists of five chapters. Chapter 1 surveys the main trends in translation studies, concluding that there is cur
10、rently a strong inclination towards Susan Bassnett's“cultural turn". In support of this conclusion, the thesis explores the inseparable relationship between culture and translation. Then two terms, namely "image" and“cul
11、tural image"are introduced and their importance in the translation of ancient Chinese poetry is suggested. In Chapter 2, the current achievements in the study of cultural image transmission are introduced, identifying, i
12、n particular, the dimensions of adaptation and alienation and their pivotal role in bridging the gap between the source language (SL) culture and target language (TL) culture. Then the author puts forwards the theoretica
13、l orientation of the thesis by analyzing the defect of adaptation and the applicability of alienation if the translation of cultural images. Chapter 3 focuses on the problems existing in the translation of cultural image
14、s in ancient Chinese poetry by viewing the problems form three perspectives , namely the improper understanding of the cultural images, the loss of cultural images, and the distortion of cultural images. In each of the t
15、hree perspectives, several versions are to delineate key elements of the problems. In Chapter 4 , the standard of translation is discussed and the conclusion is that there is no absolute or eternal standard in translatio
16、n cultural image. Based on the recognition of past achievements and the overall view of cultural translation, some practical strategies concerning cultural image transmission is translating ancient Chinese poetry into En
17、glish are offered, in which the author highlights the optimal combination of adaptation and alienation, the use of multi-versions, and adding notes. However, the author concludes that current trends in the field, as exam
