2、WSWORTHINESS ABSTRACT News headline is a condensed form and a miniature of the news story. Many readers grab the gist of news reports by scanning the headlines, which proves headline is an effective delivery of abundant
3、information within very few words. To realize this point, the editing and composing of headlines deviate and depart from other normal forms of writing, which endow headlines with distinctive stylistic features. These lin
4、guistic features need to meet various journalistic standards, i.e. newsworthiness or news values, which can be further reified as Timeliness, Brevity, Unambiguity, Prominence, Proximity, Authority, Oddity and Human Inter
5、est. To relate stylistic features of headlines with news values, this paper introduces news values one by one, then analyses stylistic features under each value in detail. Since many scholars at home and abroad have mad
6、e researches on news headlines and headlinese, the language adopted in headline composition, this paper not only summarizes stylistic features of headlines, but also explains why these features are prevailing. Therefore,
7、 to combine news value and linguistic features of headlines is a worthy trial in this field. To reveal various news values and different stylistic features of headlines realizing each value, this paper takes New York Tim
8、es, one of the most influential and notable newspapers in the world, as its research object, with the writer’s expectation that the conclusion of this thesis may also apply to other newspapers as well. Moreover, the upda
9、ted data are collected through the subscribed e-mails from the official web site: www.nytimes.com, with a span of two months—from December in 2007 to January in 2008, showing the newest trend of the study. This paper fi
10、rstly introduces news values, then it analyses the stylistic features of headlines which actualize each value from the levels of graphology, lexis, grammar and rhetoric. The result shows that the relationship between the
11、 two can be summed up as follows: firstly, news values mainly function as guidelines for the composition of news headlines; in the next place, stylistic features of headlines better the realization of news values: the fo
