1、Outcomes-Based Education(OBE)is a learner-centered approach to education that focuses on achievement of outcomes.The approach requires teachers to move from a traditional teacher-centered to a learner-centered classroom

2、practices.Therefore，this study investigated the impact of the OBE curriculum on classroom practices in grade five English classrooms in primary schools in Zomba district，Malawi.In essence，the study focused on teachers in

3、structional and assessment practices in grade five English classes and how these practices influence achievement in English literacy.
    Both qualitative and quantitative designs were used in the

4、study to collect and analyze data.Questionnaires and Structured interviews were used to collect both qualitative and quantitative data.Other data were collected through document analysis.Participants included all teacher

5、s who were present in the 6 sample primary schools，head teachers of the schools and two Leaming Area Managers from the Malawi Institute of Education.
    Through the analysis of teacher questionnai

6、res and documents，the study revealed that OBE has a positive impact on classroom practices and literacy achievement of grade five learners.It was discovered that teachers are now able to use a variety of methodologies in

7、 the classroom to accommodate each learner.Assessment of learners on a continuous basis has also been found to influence positive changes in literacy achievement levels of learner which show significant improvements for

8、both boys and girls.Despite these positive gains，the study also revealed that the implementation of OBE in primary schools in Malawi faced a lot of problems.The major problem for all the schools was the shortage of teach

9、ing and learning resources.This and other problems have negative effects on classroom practices.However，this study established that the OBE curriculum aims at achieving the outcomes；hence the positive impacts on the clas

10、sroom practices as well as on leamers’achievement in English literacy.
