2、 and rich implications. Previous studies of the novel mainly operate on the level of a dog story or an allegory of man, while this thesis applies Joseph Campbell’s theory of mythology to analyzing the hero Buck’s story.
3、As an important cultural heritage, myth exists extensively in different countries and regions. It is the essence of human thoughts and indicates the origin of human history and culture. As one of the world’s foremost sch
4、olars of mythology, Joseph Campbell indicates in his book The Hero with a Thousand Faces that some basic, universal truths lie in different manifestations across different cultures, and he further studies and figures out
5、 some general myth patterns. Based on a detailed reading of the novel, this thesis finds that Buck’s adventure falls perfectly into the Myth of the Hero described by Campbell. The hero is a dog with extraordinary physiq
6、ue, willpower and wisdom. He goes through considerable ordeal and finally returns to nature, becoming a mythical hero controlling his own destiny. Through an analysis, the thesis reveals four stages in Buck’s adventure:
7、departure, road of trials, atonement with the father and apotheosis, which proves the feasibility and legitimacy of this research method. Then the thesis goes on to discuss three minor myths encompassed in the novel: des
8、cent into hell, son/horde myth, and the pastoral myth. While the three myths are all parts of Myth of the Hero, they serve to further reveal the meaning and implication of the novel. The thesis finally concludes that the
