His application of many writing tec

2、hniques makes him far more distinctive than other contemporary writers. He feels disappointed at American literatus with the view that writers should adopt realistic representation to reflect social problems and represen

3、t social lives under the surge of abstractive and experimental postmodernism. The Corrections is one of the best examples in which Jonathan Franzen experiments with the fusion of two modes, realism and postmodernism, to

4、achieve the comic and ironical effects. The thesis consists of four chapters plus an “introduction” and a “conclusion”. Chapter one defines the literary terms related to the discussion of the novel, namely, realism, post

5、modernism and the author’s theory, which definitions are inspired by William Dean Howells, Thoma Docherty, Ihab Hassan and Jean Baudrillard respectively. Chapter two focuses on the realistic strategies in the novel inclu

6、ding authentic setting, typical characters and linear plots. The setting of social and natural environment makes novel authentic and vivid; Characters’ typicality is presented by characters’ conversations, actions and ap

7、pearance; the plots develop like a timeline, events take place one by one and are connected tightly. Chapter three discusses the embodiment of black humor and metafiction in the novel. Through black humor, the plain repr

8、esentation produces some comic effects. The comments in the novel embody the characteristics of metafiction. Chapter four points out the aesthetic effects achieved through the fusion of realism and postmodernism in The C

9、orrections. The coexistence of realism and black humor endows the novel with the comic effect. Meanwhile, through the combination of realism and metafiction, it achieves the ironical effect. In conclusion, this thesis su

10、ggests that the complexity of the current situation and the cruelty of reality are the true reasons why Franzen fuses two exclusive modes in his novel. He informs us that the complexity and variety of the current cultura
