2、sophy system, almost covering every area of philosophy, has exerted a profound influence on Western philosophy as well as western culture in general. His philosophic ideas have been discussed for more than two thousan

3、d years. In some sense, most of the western philosophic debates are rooted in Plato’s thoughts. As K. Popper said: “the impact (either positive or negative) of Plato's writings is too great to be estimated properly

4、, and one could boast that the western thoughts are either Platonic or anti-Platonic, but in no case non- Platonic.” In Plato's philosophic ideas, his thinking on ethic is more striking, which is presented in many

5、of his dialogues. Among these dialogues, Symposium is most brilliant .” (Bloom). In Symposium, Plato illustrated his ideas on love desire and he became the first western philosopher to discuss this issue. Plato’s Sympo

6、sium has been widely read and contemporary readers even take it as a guide to know Plato. People’s fascination for Symposium on the one hand lies in their curiosity for love desire or “Platonic love,” on the other hand,

7、 it steps from its “most talented“ drama skills. However, the more people read his dialogues, the more divergent will be people’s ideas to love desire issue. Plato's ethical thinking in Symposium concerns soul and b

8、ody, ideas and senses, beauty and benevolence, love and philosophy. All these are recognized as Plato’s achievements to philosophy. Therefore, a study of Symposium will not only help us understand the essence of Plato

9、9;s philosophy, but also enable us to appreciate Plato’s philosophic glamour lasting over two thousand years. A proper understanding of Symposium is especially significant for modern people, who are confused by modern ci

10、vilization and trapped in survival dilemma. Furthermore, it will inspire more people to reflect on their love and life . The thesis, by studying Plato’s Symposium, intends to analyze previous research results of Plato,
