9、ontesting.Inthisconventionthepositivedirectionofelectrodepotentialimpliesanincreasinglyoxidizingconditionattheelectrodeinquestion.Thepositivedirectionhasalsobeendenotedasthenobledirectionbecausethecrosionpotentialsofmost
10、noblemetalssuchasgoldaremepositivethanthenonpassivebasemetals.Ontheotherhthenegativedirectionoftencalledtheactivedirectionisassociatedwithreductionconsequentlythecrosionpotentialsofactivemetalssuchasmagnesium.Thisconvent
11、ionwasadoptedunanimouslybythe1953InternationalUnionofPureAppliedChemistryasthestardfelectrodepotential(1).34.2InthecontextofaspecimenelectrodeofunknownpotentialinanaqueouselectrolyteconsiderthecircuitshowninFig.1witharef
