第10章 替換與重復(fù)

1、1第十章替換與重復(fù)(SubstitutivevsReiterative)一般說(shuō)來(lái)，除非有意強(qiáng)調(diào)或出于修辭的需要，英語(yǔ)總的傾向是盡量避免重復(fù)。講英語(yǔ)的人對(duì)于隨意重復(fù)相同的音節(jié)、詞語(yǔ)或句式往往感到厭煩。許多英語(yǔ)作文教師甚至告誡學(xué)生“Neverusethesamewdwritethesamethingtwiceinasentenceunlessyouarerepeatingintentionallyfemphasisfclarity”當(dāng)然這種

2、說(shuō)法未免過(guò)分，但其目的是提醒學(xué)生不要忘了可以用替換的辦法來(lái)避免不必要的重復(fù)。Fowler兄弟在“TheKing’sEnglish”一書(shū)中也指出：Evenwhentherepetitionisapartofthewriter’siginalplan，considerationisnecessarybefeitcanbeallowedtopass：itisimpliedintheterms‘rhetical’significantrepet

12、義重復(fù)又如以下詞組：3be，sowill主語(yǔ)，so主語(yǔ)will等。漢語(yǔ)也有替代的方式，但也常常重復(fù)其所代替的動(dòng)詞(詞組)，如：1)TheAmaricansarereducingtheirdefenceexpenditurethisyear.IwonderiftheRussianswilldotoo.美國(guó)人今年已在削減國(guó)防開(kāi)支，我懷疑俄國(guó)人也會(huì)這樣做。2)Inanycasewkdoesnotincludetime，butpowerdoes

15、式，但為了使表達(dá)正確、清楚，也常常重復(fù)其所代替的詞語(yǔ)，如：1)PeoplebelievethattheAmaricanteamwiIlwinthefootballgamePeterthinksso，butIbelievenot人們認(rèn)為美國(guó)隊(duì)將贏(yíng)得這場(chǎng)足球賽，彼得也是這樣想的，我卻認(rèn)為并非如此。2)Factiesknowntoproducecomponentsfmissilessubmarinesarebeingcamouflaged，a

19、ismistakesto70percent，viceversa總的說(shuō)來(lái)，英語(yǔ)多用代稱(chēng)，以避免重復(fù)；漢語(yǔ)少用代稱(chēng)，多用實(shí)稱(chēng)，因而較常重復(fù)。漢語(yǔ)代詞的使用遠(yuǎn)遠(yuǎn)不如英語(yǔ)廣泛。人稱(chēng)代詞的性別之分，大約只是1917年以后的事，顯然是受了英語(yǔ)的影響?！八?、“她”和“它”除了因發(fā)音相同而不便在口語(yǔ)里使用之外，在同一句子或語(yǔ)段中經(jīng)常出現(xiàn)這類(lèi)代詞不僅會(huì)使指稱(chēng)混亂，還會(huì)令人感到不是中國(guó)話(huà)的味兒。王力說(shuō)，“中國(guó)現(xiàn)代語(yǔ)里不大用得著中性的‘它’，尤其是對(duì)于非動(dòng)

20、物?！⒄Z(yǔ)里有許多‘it’字譯成中國(guó)語(yǔ)的‘它’都非常不順口，……至少是覺(jué)得非常刺耳。因此，咱們對(duì)于‘它’和‘它們’(尤其是后者)以謹(jǐn)慎運(yùn)用為佳，如果希望讀者不討厭的話(huà)?！庇⒄Z(yǔ)的代詞在漢譯時(shí)常常采用還原、復(fù)說(shuō)或省略的辦法加以處理，如：1)Flarteryjsmedangerousthanhatredbecauseitcoversthestainwhichtheothercausestobewipedout阿諛比怨恨更危險(xiǎn)，因?yàn)榘⒄樠陲椓?/p>
