8、the recent decades that it has become a hot issue. Previous literary stylistics put more emphasis on the analysis of poetry and fiction, but neglected drama, among which Chinese modern drama was less to be touched upon.

9、Therefore, the author chooses Thunderstorm, the masterpiece of “Chinese Shakespeare” Cao Yu, as the objective of this study, and tries to explore characters’ personalities, relationships and mentalities in Thunderstorm f

10、rom the perspective of Searle’s speech act classification.Through substantial illustrations and detailed analysis, the author has eventually made the following three findings: a. As to different individuals, frequent use

11、 of some speech acts results from varied personalities; b. As to the same person, use of different speech acts aiming at different targets reflects their varied relationships; c. Adoption of an uncommonly-used speech act
