3、settings, objects, numbers, processes and events in the novel. Invisible Man is one of the classics of the 20th century American literature. The novel gained nationwide attention and was highly praised by literary critic

4、s as soon as it was published in 1952. Through its constant application of archetypes, Invisible Man explores the common human dilemma in terms of survival, as well as the motif of death and rebirth. In his ―Tradition an

5、d Individual Talent,‖ T. S. Eliot mentioned the historical and aesthetic aspects of literary creation, which Ellison combined skillfully in writing his Invisible Man. It is this great tradition of classical western liter

6、ary as well as Ellison‘s individual talent that breeds his world-famous masterpiece. Studies on Invisible Man from the perspective of archetypal criticism are still far from thorough and systematic. Hopefully by interpre

7、ting the novel‘s employment of classical archetypes, this thesis can decipher the deep structure of the novel, achieving a better understanding of it on a literary anthropological level. Meanwhile, the archetypal perspec

8、tive helps to reveal how the writer constructs his novel according to his sound grasp of western literary classics, how he establishes the novel‘s intensity and thematic depth through archetypes, and why the novel is wor
