10、山莊老主人收養(yǎng)后,因不堪受辱和戀愛受挫,外出致富?;貋砗蟀l(fā)現(xiàn)女友凱瑟琳已與地主林頓結(jié)婚,繼而對林頓及其子女進(jìn)行報復(fù)的故事。</p><p> 哥特特點的運(yùn)用是這部小說獲得成功的一個重要的因素。本文主要通過三個部分來分析《呼嘯山莊》中的哥特特點。第一部分介紹哥特的起源以及艾米麗的哥特情結(jié)。第二部分從三個方面來闡述《呼嘯山莊》中的哥特特點。第一,主題的哥特性。第二,人物的哥特性。第三,環(huán)境和背景的哥特性。第四,超自

12、b> Abstract</b></p><p> Emily Bronte was born in 19th century in England. She is famous for her only novel-----Wuthering Heights. It is such a strange and powerful book. Even if time flies, the at
13、tractiveness of Wuthering Heights to human beings still increases. Wuthering Heights is a story about love and revenge. It describes a foundling named Heathcliff, who is adopted by the owner of Wuthering Heights, can not
14、 stand being insulted and crossed in love, and goes out to make a fortune. When he comes back, he finds that</p><p> The use of gothic features is one of the reasons that make the novel Wuthering Heights so
15、 successful. The thesis attempts to analyze the gothic features in Wuthering Heights from three aspects. The first part introduces the origin of Goth and Emily’s gothic complex. The second part is the detailed interpreta
16、tion of gothic features in Wuthering Heights. Firstly, the theme is gothic; secondly, the characters are gothic; thirdly, the background and environment are gothic; fourthly, the supernatural</p><p> Throug

19、hts</p><p> Introduction</p><p> Emily Bronte, as a splendid writer and poet, was born in a small city named Thornton, Yorkshire, in the north of England. She and her two sisters-----Charlotte
20、 and Anne, are called “three sisters of Bronte”. Emily is an ingenious, even though she is very shy. Her only novel Wuthering Heights was published in 1847. Different from Charlotte’s hot hit, until Emily’s death, the bo
21、ok began to be highly valued. However, Wuthering Heights is still an unusual novel compared with other styles of novel. </p><p> In spite of the unpopularity of the gothic novels in 19th century, Emily Bron
22、te still adopted the gothic traditions in her only novel---Wuthering Heights. So it is full of as well as gothic traditions----- complex, obscure, and difficult in Wuthering Heights. However, if Emily merely adopted the
23、gothic traditions, Wuthering Heights could not be such an excellent novel and be admired by so many litterateurs. In a light, the achievement of Wuthering Heights originates from the gothic features. The</p><p
24、> There are a few papers about gothic features in Wuthering Heights at home. This paper mainly discusses and explores the gothic features from four aspects in Wuthering Heights,and then analyses the inheritance to go
25、thic features that Emily did. Furthermore, through the gothic factors, this paper aims to show the readers the dramatic love between the hero and the heroine.</p><p> 1. The Origin of Goth and Emily’s Gothi
26、c Complex</p><p> 1.1The Origin of Goth and Gothic Literature</p><p> “Goth” represents Germanic tribes in Western Europe in origin. Furthermore, it is a member of the nomadic peoples. And the
27、y are famous for their atrocity and barbarism. From the 1st century AD to the 5th century AD, under the pressure of existence, Goth tribe continuously extend their territory so that they are despised and rejected for the
28、ir inhumanity by the Romans at that time. Compared with the civilization of the Romans, the Goth is barbaric and uncivilized. Until a thousand years later of </p><p> When it came to the middle & later
29、18th centuries, Goth became a new name of literary genre. The first gothic novel originates from Horace Walpole in 1764, in his work----the castle of Otranto with “A Gothic Story” as his work’s subtitle. Those gothic nov
30、els often take place in the Middle Ages, taking spooky castles, ruins and wilderness as its background. And the heroes in these gothic novels are always unsociable and eccentric and even fierce and cruel. Therefore, the

32、hen it came into the Romantic period of British literature, the gothic novels had fallen off remarkably, even so, they still developed. Wuthering Heights was published in 1847 in the Victorian Age, at that time, the goth

35、 is to disclose the dark side and hideous features of human nature through revenge, hatred and inheritance. And the theme in Wuthering Heights is related to revenge and hatred. “Wuthering Heights-----a tragedy which cent

38、ts.</p><p> 2.2.1The Gothic Hero------ Heathcliff </p><p> Villain-hero is also called Byronic hero. Those people combine good and evil in one, possess immeasurable power, at the same time, th
39、ey are withholding his feelings. Heathcliff, the gothic hero in Wuthering Heights is the embodiment of gothic characters. “He is a dark-skinned gipsy in aspect, in dress and manners a gentleman.” “His reserve springs fro

41、<p> The traditional gothic heroine is a lady who is small, slender and trim. Those people are always flimsy and at the mercy of the evil. “Besides Heathciff, the heroine Isabella also belongs to the gothic mode. T
42、he heroines of early gothic novels always appear very faint, tender and passive; they are often lured and pursued by a villain-hero (Liu, 2006:14).” The heroine------Isabella in Wuthering Heights is a reflection of those
43、 people. She is attracted by the villain-hero-----Heathcliff, and loves</p><p> 2.2.3The Reflection of Gothic Screwball -----Catharine</p><p> In Wuthering Heights, Catherine is a key to the b
44、ook. Because of her betray, Heathcliff loses his senses and becomes a demon. She is such an important role in this book that the author Emily also uses gothic features depicting her. What’s more, Catherine’s gothic featu
45、res find expression in her gothic screwball. She often produces illusion and can not distinguish between illusion and reality. She loves Heathcliff, but she can not give up her status and her honor that Linton gives her.
46、 So when sh</p><p> 2.3 The Gothic Environment in Wuthering Heights</p><p> With the speaking of Wuthering, we can have some cool feelings. Wuthering Heights is also a place that Heathcliff li
47、ves in. The word----“wuthering” has two meanings in Chinese. One is whistle, especially a sound produced from high speed. The other is pipe; it is like a wind screamed through the trees. Both of those meanings give us a

49、nts in Wuthering Heights</p><p> Supernaturalism can also be called something supernatural or hyperphysical. It means that events, forces or powers which can not be explained by the laws of science and that
50、 seem to involve gods or magic. In gothic literature, there is Manito here and there. It is included by gothic features. “Fantastic and supernatural occurrences never stop disconcerting Wuthering Heights in the novel (Zh
51、ao, 2010:24).” When Lockwood slept in Catherine’s former room, he found something horrible. His fingers clo</p><p> When Catherine died and was buried her in her grave, Heathcliff was so sorrowful that he h
52、eard a sigh from the cemetery. That ensured him that Catherine’s soul was still around him and called him. Until the end of the book, after the death of Heathcliff, people always saw the ghost of Heathcliff and Catherine

55、ions, Wuthering Heights can not be welcomed by so many readers and scholars, until now there are a lot of discussions about it. All in all, based on the traditional gothic features, Emily makes lots of reformations and i
56、nnovations to gothic traditions in Wuthering Heights. In the foregoing chapters, we have been told the inheritance to gothic literature, so thi</p><p> 3.1The Deepening of the Theme</p><p> In
57、 general, the theme in traditional gothic novel always gives priority to the goodness and evil. It is mostly about the exploration of morality. But in Wuthering Heights, Emily does not lay great stress on the conflict of
58、 the goodness and evil. “In her mind, there are no salient features about the conflict of correct and wrong outlook which is a philosophy in Victorian Age (Deng, 2005:86).” The characters in Wuthering Heights are not sim
59、ple; they have their own personal qualities. For instance,</p><p> 3.2The Deepening of Characters’ Psychology</p><p> Heathcliff-----the hero in Wuthering Heights is different from the hero in
60、 gothic traditions in some respect. Traditional gothic characters often pay attention to personal interest and their own appetite. But in Wuthering Heights, Heathcliff is full of intense feelings, his love and hatred for

62、t;p> The heroine-----Catherine is a reflection of Emily’s development to gothic traditions. Compared with other traditional gothic heroines, Catherine is passionate. When she was young, she behaved as a man, who was
63、in pursuit of freedom. What she acted is so different form the traditional gothic heroines. She often played games with Heathicliff, just as a ragger.</p><p> Another heroine-------Isabella, is also unlike
64、traditional heroines who are in the gothic novels. As a traditional heroine, she should be puny and delicate; meanwhile, she should obey the hero and has no ideas about anything. However, Isabella escapes from the hero--
65、---- Heathcliff, and gives birth to her son. She is different from those heroines who just wait the hero to save them, and do nothing. When Isabella is abused by Heathcliff, she does not wait others to help her and endur
66、e afflictions</p><p> 3.3The Change of Narrative Method</p><p> The novel is narrated in a multi-layer method, which is different from other gothic novels. The first three chapters unfold the
67、tale. The boarder-----Lockwood show the readers what he sees in Wuthering Heights so that the readers are interested in the story. Then the narrator in the story turns to next one-----Nelly. Nelly was familiar with every
