1、Dar-es-salaam, formerly a Tanzania's capital city up to 1974,practically, has continued to be the main administrative, military,social and economic centre of the country since it's establishment about a century ago.

2、A good percentage of all communications on finance, trade, politics and social aspects between the country and the rest of the World are conducted through this city.Being a primate city in the country, and an impo

4、n the country.Like most towns in the country, the city was built in an area potentially rich in natural resources such as fertile soil, fresh air and plenty of clear water. However,the recently rapid growth of th

5、e City, coupled with lack of Environmental and resource planning has made it unmanageable,intensifying the usual urban environmental ills common in many cities all over the World which include:Traffic jams,

6、 uncontrolled land-uses, poor housing, slums,water and air pollution to mention a few of them.To halt, or rather minimize these Environmental problems, the City's long term objective in the year 2,000 a

7、s proposed in the 1979 Master Plan is to curb these ills and make the city one among the leading International centres in developing nations socially,economically, financially and in trade. To live to this ambi

8、tion (objective) the overall planning of the city need to adhere to both international standards and Modernization which form the backbone to this Research.Research LayoutWith the City's long term st

9、rategic planning development objective in mind, this study covers four parts derived from seven chapters as elaborated below:Part one, which is comprised of an introduction and chapter 1,gives out the definition

10、of the topic, and a literature review covering the origin and an evolution of Urban/City planning and design to date. This is meant to give a ground-work to the study,on city planning and design's ethics

11、 and norms. To get enough World-wide knowledge on planning, design and environmental quality,the study further focuses on Contemporary City planning, design and environmental quality supported with live exam

12、ples from both developing and developed countries.Part Two, formulated by chapters 2,3 and 4, starts by first looking into factors which motivated the Researcher to carry a study on this topic and in the

13、 city of Dar-es-salaam in particular.Second,the Methodology used and problems encountered in carrying the research as well as the expected results are also explained in this part. For the sack of orienting the read

14、ers to the case study area, this part also looks into the Geographical, social and economic setting of the city. To emphasise the fact that City planning,design and environmental quality go hand in

15、hand together with management, this part ends up by analyzing the administrative machinery aspects of the Dar-es-salaam City Council.Part Three (i.e. Chapter 5), based on the Researcher's knowledge on Cit

16、y Planning and Design as shown in appendix 1.marrying it with the literature review and a visual survey conducted in Tanzania and in some cities in the People's Republic of China, this part anal

17、ysis the existing situation in Dar-essalaam city, coming up with findings on infrastructures and resource base qualities. Actors involved and problems facing different city actors are identifie

18、d and recommendations given.Part Four combines chapters 6 and 7. So as to make the future actors get the right doze to cure the existing environmental problems in the city. chapter 6 looks into measures whi

19、ch have so far been taken by different city actors to curb the Environmental quality deterioration, and also analysis to what extent the application of these measures have been successful. Again, based on t

20、he literature review, integrated it with the identified problems and the future expectations of the Dar-es-salaam City, this part has managed to come up with concrete recommendations and a general conclusion necess

21、ary to halt the existing Urban ills and promote good environmental quality in the city.Metric units are used in the Research book and where another enhance clarity, illustrative materials (figures and plates)
