4、 this research falls short of creating action,interventions, or change. In this article, we argue that mass communication should be considered a cornerstone discipline for sustainability science research, particularly w

5、ithin transdisiciplinary sustainability science teams. We contend that mass communication researchers can advance sustainability efforts by moving toward a more engaged approach. In an effort to support scholars’ transit

6、ion to such engagement, we consider how traditional mass communication theories can add value to action-oriented transdisciplinary sustainability science efforts and provide examples of engaged, transdisciplinary mass

7、 communication scholarship.INTRODUCTIONThe special call for this issue of Mass Communication and Society raised a key question: What are the roles of mass media and other forms of communication with regard to climate and

8、 sustainability programs? This question is particularly relevant given the rapid advancement in global risks we face as a society. As we consider communication’s role within climate and sustainability programs, we extend

9、 this line of questioning to reevaluate the role of mass media and communication researchers within sustainability research and practice as well. Mass media and communication scholars have long studied sustainability iss

10、ues (e.g., Lewis, 2000; Nielsen Su, Akin, Brossard, Scheufele, we see mass communication research as a key part of this effort. Mass communication scholarship is so vastly important to coproduction (Cornwell Pomeranz

11、et al., 2014; Ramachandra Lemos Pohl, 2008). Transdisciplinarity requires an iterative approach to research, where researchers work beyond disciplinary boundaries to engage stakeholders in the creation and implementati

12、on of research-based policies and projects. Key here is the need for the mutual understanding that diverse kinds of knowledge have value and must be included in research design, data collection, and knowledge outcomes. W

13、ithin transdisciplinary sustainability science, researchers have one type of knowledge and stakeholders have another, and both have equal valuation in the research process (Anadón, Giménez, Ballestar, Hage, Ler

14、oy, Donk, Metag, Kohrin, Tewksbury & Scheufele, 2009), and critique stereotypical portrayals of marginalized groups (McGreavy & Lindenfeld, 2015). These studies are essential to understanding media processes, t

15、rends, and effects, yet they rely on quantitative and qualitative analysis of count, survey, or thematic data, and rarely, if ever, require engagement with scientists from other disciplines or the direct engagement with

16、human subjects. Even more distinct is the lack of stakeholder inclusion in mass communication research, be it the inclusion of local media consumers, journalists, or diverse voices.Mass communication researchers need to

17、be included in these transdisciplinary efforts, as media effects theories offer a crucial understanding of issues that these teams deal with in almost every issue: why people perceive sustainability issues in certain way

18、s and what shapes their behavior in response. If mass communication theories are ignored in the sustainability science design, we risk missing an understanding of how mass media play a key role in creating a shared cultu
