4、ture than do under the framework of linguistics. Studying autobiographies from linguistics can make up the blank of researches on autobiographies so as to deepen multilateral understanding of autobiography, which may at

5、the same time contribute to diversity of literature creation, normalization of writing style, extensive application of linguistics, etc. Thus, it is meaningful to interpret autobiography under linguistic framework. Mark

6、Twain’s Autobiography is with authenticity. Besides, Mark Twain is a famous American humorist, novelist and writer of local American, western American and the mainland of the United States. Thus, understanding his works

7、contributes a lot to be familiar with the whole America. Appraisal theory proposed by Martin has been widely used to study interpersonal meaning of discourse since its emergence. Appraisal theory has made up for the defe

8、ct of functional linguistics?s study on interpersonal meaning. Appraisal Theory is divided into three intertwined subsystems, namely attitude system, engagement system and graduation system. This paper aims to interpret

9、Mark Twain’s Autobiography from the perspective of engagement system in Appraisal Theory. Besides, thirty thousand characters selected from the first, middle and last parts of Mark Twain’s Autobiography are analyzed acco

10、rding to engagement framework. Combining qualitative and quantitative methods, this paper aims to solve these two questions: 1) What are the distributive features of engagement resources in Mark Twain's Autobiography

11、? 2) What engagement strategies does Mark Twain employ to interact with potential readers? Based on those two questions this paper proposes, research findings can be summed up as following: Firstly, there are abundant en

12、gagement resources in Mark Twain’s Autobiography; Secondly, engagement resources are unevenly distributed. The frequency of dialogic contraction is higher than that of dialogic expansion. Within contraction, disclaim res
