2、st reflect the spiritual barrenness of English middle class. His characters attempt to obtain liberation through wriggling the restraints of society and convention. A Room with a View narrates a romantic story of a middl

3、e class woman and a lower class man. The heroine Lucy is deeply influenced by the restraints of society and convention of the patriarchal society, and can not faces up to her emotion. Finally she is encouraged to break t

4、hrough all the social and conventional restraints and gain her true love and freedom. Forster hopes that English middle class people could introspect themselves and extricate from social obstacles. This thesis attempts

5、to analyze the evolution of Lucy’s cultural identity under the influences of the heterogeneous culture and the marginal culture: from Lucy’ dominant cultural identity to the split of her cultural identity, and then the r

6、econstruction of her cultural identity. The thesis is divided into three parts except an introduction and a conclusion. In the first chapter, the author analyzes Lucy’s dominant cultural identity including Lucy’s Engli

7、sh middle class’ cultural identification and Lucy’s “undeveloped heart”. As an English middle class woman, Lucy leads her life according to English middle class’ convention and standards, and always represses her passion

8、 unconsciously. In chapter two, the emphasis is placed on the split of Lucy’s cultural identity. It is proved that Lucy’s cultural identity splits up under the dual influences of Italian culture and the Emersons’ attitu

9、des towards the world. The thesis tries to analyze the split of Lucy’s cultural identity from two aspects: clash of the English middle class’ convention with Italian culture and clash of the English middle class’ ideolog

10、y with the marginal class’ ideology. The following chapter examines the reconstruction of Lucy’s cultural identity. Travelling in Italy and communicating with the lower class men, Lucy’s own consciousness begins to awak
