2、 in the late 20th century. Murdoch is a philosopher who advocates Truth and Good. Her novels show everywhere her philosophical thinking and the continuous pursuit of truth and good. One of her masterpieces, The Black Pri

3、nce: A Celebration of Love, which was published in 1973, enjoyed a high esteem and won her the James Tait Black Memorial Prize. In The Black Prince, Murdoch artistically interprets the pursuit of truth and good and expl

4、ores the relationship between art and morality. This article attempts to start from what is the true artist to expound the continuous art pursuit and deep moral concern in Murdoch’s novel. Murdoch combines the profound p

5、hilosophy with familiar quotidian lives and environment, thus breaks the boundaries between literature and philosophy. She believes that the artist must emancipate himself from the ego and concerns the otherness outside

6、the self. Only through this transformation, can the artist “see the non-self” and ultimately achieve the improvement of art and morality. This thesis consists of three chapters. The first chapter introduces the context

7、of Murdoch’s philosophy and her philosophical thoughts embodied in this novel in order to explore the reason why she puts her philosophical concepts in literary creation. The second chapter mainly discusses how Murdoch a

8、chieves her ideal artistic pursuit of “truth” through depicting the characters in the novel. Murdoch believes that artist should respect the reality and the world of contingency in which characters live. Only by discardi

9、ng the subjective feeling and dispelling the ego, can artist reflect the truth and achieve the perfection of art. Combining with Murdoch’s philosophical theory, chapter three expounds how Bradley,the protagonist,graduall

10、y pays attention to the others and walks on the path of pursuit of “good” by getting rid of his selfish desires after a lengthy process of self-transformation. Through Bradley’s pursuit of art and good, Murdoch expresses
