3、stancedespitepointingouttheexcessiveuseofemotivelanguage.BycontrastmostoftheJapaneserespondentsshowedstrongdisagreementwiththeedit’sattitudepointingoutthelackofevidenceinfmation.Althoughtheresultdoesnotnecessarilyshowtha

4、tthissingleeditialhadadirectinfluenceontherespondentstherearenohelesssomeindicationsofthewaysinwhichnavereaderscouldbeinfluencedbythemedia.Finallythepaperdiscussesimplicationsofthisstudyflanguagepedagogy.Thispaperisanatt

5、empttoinvestigatetherelationshipbetweenreaders’culturalassumptionsbeliefsvaluestheirinterpretationperceptionofnewsdiscoursefocusingspecificallyontheBritishpress.Newsdiscoursehasbeenextensivelystudiedinthepastbycommentats

6、fexamplefromtheperspectiveofmediasociolinguistics(Bell1991BellFowlerHodgeKressHodgeSimpson1993Trew1979)ofcriticallinguisticssocialthey(Fairclough198919921995a1995b19982000)ofsocialcognition(vanDijk1988199319961998).Their

7、approachhoweverisnotfreefromlimitationsithasbeencriticallyscrutinizedmainlyftheinadequacyofthelinguisticanalysis.Inparticulartherehasbeenstrongcriticismoftheanalysisoflimitedlexicalitemsgrammaticalfeatureswhichareseeming

8、lychosenarbitrarilytomeettheirspecificinterpretationofthelackofobjectivesuppts.DirectIndirectInfluencesTheinfluenceswereacterizedbyadrasticchangeofattitudestowardswhalingafterreadingthecommentarywhichshowedthattherespond

9、entscooperatedwiththeauth’s‘pretextualpurposes’(Widdowsonfthcoming)cametohavethesameviewashimher.Ihavedividedtheseintotwotypes:directindirectinfluences.Thelattershowsamuchsubtlerfmofinfluencemainlythroughintertextuality(

10、Fairclough2003).DirectInfluence(CompleteAgreementAgreement–Awareness)DirectinfluencewasmostclearlyobservedintheresponsesoffourofthesevenEFLfiveofthe30Japaneserespondents.ThefouroutofthesevenEFLrespondentswhoclaimedtobene

11、utralonthisissueattheoutset(seetheresultofQuestion1PartIIinTable1)mainlyonthegroundsoflackofinfmationintereststatedthattheyagreedwiththecommentaryoneit.(AnswertoQ1inPartIIIbyaBritishfemaleneutralrespondentBr.21).Despitec

12、laimingtobeneutralmostoftheserespondentsbasicallyagreedwiththeauth’santiwhalingopinionwhilecastingdoubtonthecredibilityoftheinfmationtheuseoflanguage.TherewasalsooneBritishmalerespondentwhodespiteclaimingtobeantiwhalinga

15、‘neutral’Japaneserespondentswhoclearlydisagreedwiththeuseoftheemotivelanguagewhileretainingtheirneutrality(AnswersbyJPNs20thatisalthoughtheinfmantsunderstoodtheauth’spretextualpurposesinprinciplethewayinwhichthesepurpose

16、swererealizedseemstohavehadareverseeffectonthem.Disagreement:CompleteMismatchofPretextualAssumptionsThiscategyincludes16outof30Japaneserespondents(53.3%)whodisagreedwiththeauthincludingeightrespondentswhoattheoutsetclaim

17、edtobeneutralaswellaseightprowhalingrespondents.ThisshowsthatthecommentaryhadacompletelyreverseeffectonsomeJapanese‘neutral’respondentscomparedtotheEnglishonesmostofwhomcametoagreewiththeauth’sopinionwhiledisagreeingwith

18、theuseoflanguagethusclaimingtoremain‘neutral’onthesurface(seeTable2).Thatistheauth’spretextualpurposeswererejectedmainlybecauseofthestrategiessheusedtorealizethepurposes.Thedifferenceseemstoresultmostlyfromthedifferences

19、intheperceptionoftheuseoflanguageofoverexaggerationbasedon‘unsatisfacty’‘onesided’infmationasclearlypointedoutbysomeJapaneserespondentsinthefollowing:ThusdespitereadingthesamecommentarymeJapanese‘neutral’respondentscamet

20、odisagreewiththeauth’sopinionpointingouttheinadequacyonesidednessoftheinfmationwhereasnoEnglishprofessional‘neutral’respondentsclearlydisagreedwiththeauthparticularlyintheiropinionsaboutwhaling.ThedisagreementoftheJapane

21、serespondentshoweverappearstoiginatemeinthedisagreementwiththeauth’sexcessuseofemotivelanguageimbalancedinfmationratherthantheantiwhalingopinionitself.Theirjudgementthusseemstohavebasedsimultaneouslyontheiropinionsaboutw
