13、c.Itwassoldf$25.ItishardtodeterminehowsuccessfultheWhirlwindwasasmostofthemweresoldinChicagoBostonitislikelythatmanywerelostintheGreatChicagoFireof1871.OnlytwoareknowntohavesurvivedoneofwhichcanbefoundintheHooverHistical
14、Center.McGaffneywasbutoneofmany19thcenturyinventsintheUnitedStatesEuropewhodevisedmanualvacuumcleaners.Heobtainedapatent(U.S.No.91145)onJune81869.MelvilleBissellIn1876MelvilleBissellofGrRapidsMichiganUSAcreatedavacuumcle
15、anerfhiswifeAnnatocleanupsawdustincarpeting.ShtlyafterBissellCarpetSweeperswerebn.AfterMelvillediedunexpectedlyin1889Annatookcontrolofthecompanywasoneofthemostpowerfulbusinesswomenoftheday.JohnS.ThurmanOnNovember141898Jo
16、hnS.ThurmanofSt.LouisMissouriUSA.Submittedfpatent(U.S.No.634042)a“pneumaticcarpetrenovat”.ItwasissuedonOctober31899.ThurmancreatedagasolinepoweredcarpetcleanerftheGeneralCompressedAirCompany.Inanewspaperadvertisementfrom
17、theSt.LouisDispatchThurmanofferedhisinventionofthehsedrawn(whichwentdotodo)motizedcleaningsysteminSt.Louis.Louis.Heofferedcleaningservicesat$4pervisit.By1906Thurmanwasofferingbuiltincentralcleaningsystemsthatusedcompress
18、edairyetfeaturedndustcollection.Thurman’smachineissometimesconsideredthefirstvacuumcleaner.Howeverthedustwasblownintoareceptacleratherthanbeingsuckedinaninthemachinenowused.InlaterpatentlitigationJudgeAugustusHruledthatT
