4、cussionsofaccesstohighereducation.Severalfactshavebeenidentifiedthathavecontributedtothecurrentfocusonfinancialaid.Ratesofreturntohighereducationattendancearenearrecdlevelstheinequalityofincomewealthdistributiongapistheg
5、reatestithasbeensincetheGreatDepressioninstitutionsaremereliantontuitionasrevenuepatternsshowtalentedlowincomestudentsareenrollingmeoftenintwoyearinstitutions.Allofthesehavecometothefefrontonthecurrentdiscussionoffinanci
6、alaidasitrelatestolowincomestudents(McPherson&Shapiro2006).Adisconnectbetweentheamountoffinancialaidprovidedtheknowledgeofreceiversexistsinfiguringoutwhylowincomestudentsdonotpursuepostsecondaryeducationchooselessexpensi
7、veoptions.Financialaiddoesnotonlycomeintoplayfstudentsfamilieswhentheyareapplyingtoaninstitutionbutplaysarolethroughouttheeducationalpipeline(Fitzgerald&Delaney2002).Havingknowledgeearlyinastudent’ssecondaryeducationcare
8、ercanhelpshapetheirtheirfamiliesperceptionofwhatisavailablewhatopptunitieslieaheadpostgraduation.Flowincomefamilieshavingbasicknowledgeofthefinancialaidavailabilityplanningfinanciallyfcollegehavingaccesstofinancialaidinf
9、mationisextremelyimperativebecausesocioeconomicstatusiscloselyrelatedtotheknowledgeonehasaboutmeprestigiousinstitutions.Thefamilycontributiontoastudent’seducationhaschangedovertimecontinuestodecreaseflowincomestudentscre
10、atingalargergapbetweenfinancialaidreceivedwhatafamilycanaffd.Afteradjustingfinflationtheaveragefederalexpectedfamilycontributionhasdeclinedoverthepasttenyearsflowdleincomestudents(Choy2004).Expectedfamilycontributionisde
11、terminedbasedonafmulathattakesintoaccountfamilyincomeassetsfamilysizenumberofothercollegestudentsinfamilystudentincomeassetsfdependentstudents(Choy&Berker2003).In2003theaverageexpectedfamilycontributionwas$1000to$1500thi
12、rtyonetoftyfivepercentoflowincomestudentshadanexpectedfamilycontributionofzerodependingonthetypeofinstitutionattended(Choy&Berker2003).Manylowincomestudentsneedtofindwaystocoverthegapcreatedbetweenincreasedtuitiondecreas
13、edfamilycontribution.Duetoincreasingpricesofpostsecondaryeducationdecreaseinexpectedfamilycontributiontheaverageneedffinancialaidhasincreasedflowincomestudents(Choy2004).Theresultofthecurrentclimateisashiftinwhattypeoffi
14、nancialaidlowincomestudentsusetofinancetheireducation.Fromtheinceptionoffinancialaidgrantmoneywassetasidetooffsetthecostofpostsecondaryeducationwithoutthefearofdebtburdenupongraduation.Thoughgrantsarestillpartofmanyfinan
15、cialaidpackagestodayovertimechangesinfinancialaidpolicythecostofpostsecondaryeducationhasledtoincreasesinbrowingwkstudyoptions.Theimbalancebetweengrantaidloanaidpenalizeslowincomestudentsbylimitingtheirdecisionsduringthe
16、transitionfromhighschooltocollege(Price2004).Theshiftindistributionhashaddifferentimpactsovertimecreatinggreaterconcernabouthowstudentsfinancetheireducationwhethernottheycanfindenoughaidtocovertheirunmetneed.Itisalsoimpt
