7、vie is a cultural carrier of a country, which propagates the national culture and reflects the dominant value of whole nations. The United States is a warm worship personal heroism country. With the core of the superhero

8、es in Hollywood movies, it has the responsibility to promote the major value throughout the country and the world. This paper is going to discuss the origin and the development of the individual heroism, and at the same

11、from Taken Movies</p><p>　　Introduction</p><p>　　Movie is a very popular form of art that are approved by people widely. Meanwhile, it is also an very effective way to disseminate the national c

12、ulture and values to the audience and impact their behavior and thinking. Tian Wei pointed out that movie is not only as an entertainment at all, but surpasses the amusement and profit. In addition, he also suggested tha

13、t the culture and main values of a country can be depicted in its movie.1 In America, the individual heroism is admired by most of peop</p><p>　　For the American individual heroism, different assessments, wh

14、ich are not only all good but also bad, held by different scholars. On the one hand, high proportion of people are in favor of this value, because they think under this value system, the human’s personal character will b

15、e fully respected. Lu Qian figured out that the superheroes were messenger of justice in vast majority of Hollywood movies and guardians of conscience. Besides, they fought against the evil and pursued the bright futur&l

16、t;/p><p>　　This thesis is going to focus on the origin and development of individual heroism and from the perspective of Taken to explain the American individual heroism based on the three areas, embodied justi

17、ce, bravery and kinship.</p><p>　　I. The Origin and Development of Individual Heroism </p><p>　　It is well known that any doctrine has its own origin and development. Thus, the individual herois

18、m also originate from some important events that may give the great influence to America. As for the development, many reasons can be taken into consideration, such as culture, economic, politics and etc. For the origin

19、and development, different scholars hold different views. Therefore, the origin and development of individual heroism of America are going to be discussed below.</p><p>　　A. The Origin of Individual Heroism

20、</p><p>　　1. The Frontier’s Time is the Key to Individual Heroism</p><p>　　America is a emerging nation that are made of by immigrants who were from all over the world. However, the first settle

21、rs were from Europe mostly and they are almost all puritans who were persecuted for religion in Europe. Zhou Xiaoxin believed that because of these nonsense oppress, they had a strong desire to go to a new continent to s

22、eek the new life. Yet when they had arrived there, they found it is very difficult to reclaim this undeveloped land. Under this kind of circumstance, a superhero</p><p>　　The Religion is the Reason</p>

23、<p>　　Based on the above mentioned, the first emigrants were mostly puritans. As the pathfinders of American history, they proved that the human can save themselves through the hard work and fighting continuously.

24、 Wang Xiaojun revealed that the puritans demonstrate their principle that people can rescue themselves by their endeavor to the world from their own example. Although this thoughts had been praised excessively by the mod

26、lity, they think that they are quite unique and most important. As for the reason of this thinking, the transcendentalism maybe is a very leading factor. The transcendentalism is a philosophy and literature movement, spr

27、ang up in the late 1820s and the 1830s at the New England Region and led by Emerson and Thoreau. According to WIKIPEDIA, the disciple of the transcendentalism believed that when they are truly self-reliant and independen

29、al expansion from the East to the West along the Atlantic Ocean. It is a great factor to American history and not only has huge influence on the extension of the territory of this country, but also play a leading role in

33、 America, everyone would live a better, richer and more comfortable life. </p><p>　　B. The Development of Individual Heroism</p><p>　　After an value was formed, it must go through a series of de

34、velopments and changes. Then it will become a mature value and be accepted by the people. So does same as the individual heroism, it is not be admired by the Americans as it turn up at the very beginning. As the core val

35、ue of a country, its influence not only reflected in a single aspect, but in every field that may play a decisive role in a country. Individual heroism as the main value of American, its impact has permeate various domai

37、contains abundant aspects. However, it is cannot be denied that the individual heroism did bring great influence to the culture and it also received the enormous development from all aspects of culture. Because this thes

39、the public in modern society. The modern people mostly have a lot of pressure whatever in works or life, even study, especially the young generation. So, it is inevitably that they need find a place to relax themselves a

40、nd release the stress. Apparently, the cinema has became the very perfect place for them to go. Because in the cinema, they can throw them into the atmosphere of the movies and even become another man following t</p&g

41、t;<p>　　In recent years, Hollywood movies has swept over the globe. As mentioned before, the movie has obligation to show the value to the viewers. And the individual heroism is the one of the core values of Ameri

42、ca. Hence, this value became a trend in the Hollywood movies. Yet it is not a new trend in the Hollywood movies, it came out early in the movie. As time goes by and the movie become more and more popular, this trend reco

44、development and often rank the first place in the world. That’s the reason why the American people feel proud of their country. However, the American economy not always so strong that cannot be shake, it also has the dif

45、ficult times. For example, the Great Depression and the period about the Economical Crisis in 2008 both gave the huge attack to America. Because of these strikes, the order of the American domestic economy has bee</p&

46、gt;<p>　　Next is the Great Depression, the very difficult time for the Americans and also the era that the individual heroism grew rapidly. The Great Depression happened in the 1930s, at that time, the people’s li

47、fe was dispute by the Economic Crisis totally. They have no job, no money to let them get a comfortable life as before and their heart had been shocked tremendously and lost the faith to the life and need a hero to help

48、them to get out this difficult situation. As a result, in order to alleviate</p><p>　　Then, the period after the second World War also have to mentioned in the development of the individual heroism. After th

49、e second World War, the American Economy began to revive, but influenced by the war, the people’s heart feel empty and they need some external stimuli. Hence, a lot of heroin movies came out, such as the most presented S

50、uperman which has impacted several generations. Besides this typical times, there’s also representative era that the individual heroism has grow rapidly, inclu</p><p>　　The Influence from Politics</p>

51、<p>　　Since the disintegration of the Soviet Union, America has became the single superpower in the world that no country can compete with. So, the American’s political position has promoted a lot than before. But

52、if America wanted to consolidate it’s position, it needed to convinced the world to recognize its political value and accept it. As for political values, the America has kinds of values for different countries and region

53、s, but the one of the main values still should be the individual heroism</p><p>　　In Hollywood movies, the heroes who can save the world were all from America and only them can save the earth and protect the

54、 people. There are a lot of examples, the most obvious is in American Captain and The Amazing Spider-Man, the hero represented America by wearing the red and blue suit. Hence, in the movies, it is also implicated that th

55、e magnificent feat that the hero save the world just can be done by America. Meanwhile, all the plots, such as disasters appeared in the movie or event tha</p><p>　　In fact, some big event had been mentioned

56、 in the economical development, such as two World Wars, the Great Depression and the disintegration of Soviet Union. These political event did bring the first hand material for the movies and also give the huge space for

57、 the development for the individual heroism. The most significant matter should be the First World War, because America as the victors received reparations of war and sold many munitions to other countries. Through such

58、kind of way, this </p><p>　　II. Individual Heroism in the Character of Taken</p><p>　　A. Brief Introduction about Taken</p><p>　　From 2008 to now, three Taken movies have been produ

59、ced. They are Taken I, Taken II and Taken III which all wrote by Luc Besson who is the director of The Professional, which is the very famous individual heroism movie. Besides, they are all stirring by Liam Neeson who is

60、 the heroin in lots of action films that including large number of heroic movies, such as Darkman, Battleship and etc.</p><p>　　In Taken I, it told a story about the a retired agent saved his daughter from t

61、he kidnapper. Bryan is a retired agent and he wanted to become a qualified father to his daughter, named Kim and his ex-wife. Because his daughter wanted to be a singer, so he bought karaoke machine to her and took the j

62、ob as guardian for a singer to help his daughter to achieve her dream. However, his daughter who was just seventeen wanted to go Paris with her friend and ignored his father’s objection. It made Bryan </p><p&g

63、t;　　In Taken II, in last episode, In order to rescue his daughter, Bryan killed a lot of member of the criminal gang from Albania who decide to revenge. Therefore, when Bryan and his family went to Turkey for vacation, t

64、hey ready to kill them both to revenge. And the first victim is Bryan’s wife, they wanted to kidnapped her to force Bryan to give up. But they underestimated the ability that Bryan have, for the sake of saving his wife,

65、Bryan fought against with these monsters again. Finally, he resc</p><p>　　In Taken III，Bryan and his wife were back together. Unfortunately, his wife was murdered and he was set up by the real murderer. All

66、the police were called together to after him, so he had to run and figured out who set him up. Meanwhile he also had to protect his daughter. In the process of escape, he depended on his strong capability and the love fo

67、r his family and bravery that the normal people may not able to think, he captured the real killer and proved his innocence.</p><p>　　The above is the brief introduction about Taken, and the obvious characte

68、ristics of individual heroism that presented in the movie will be explained in the below. In fact, in this movie, a lot of characteristics had showed, such as individualism and etc. However, there are three most obvious

69、characteristics are going to be discussed in the below, they are justice, bravery and kinship.</p><p>　　B. Justice</p><p>　　When mentioned individual heroism, the justice is a feature that have

70、to come up with to discuss. Justice, as the most symbolic characteristic, almost showed in every Hollywood heroic movie, no exception in Taken. From Taken I to Taken III, Bryan always fight with the criminal gangs or the

71、 evil power. For example, in Taken I, Bryan gave a lesson to his friends who try to far away from the criminal gangs to keep his officials. In addition, Bryan also fought with the evil power, which is a very da</p>

72、<p>　　C. Bravery</p><p>　　Bravery is same as the justice that is a very obvious characteristic in the heroine movies. In Taken, there is a large number of plot, in which showed the hero’s bravery. For

73、 instance, In Taken I, Bryan took his daughter out of the danger by himself. In the process, he met many unimaginable difficulties that the normal people may couldn’t overcome. It is believed that he fought with the enti

74、re criminal gangs by himself alone. Though he was injured, he still not give up until saved his daughter. </p><p>　　D. Kinship</p><p>　　Different from other traditional individual heroism movies

75、, kinship is a very clear feature in Taken and even can be regard as the key of this movie. Although in most Hollywood heroic movies, the hero usually alone and no family or friends, he fought for all the people or prote

76、cted the whole world. Alternatively, he had someone closed, but he would hide them very cautiously and didn’t let them become the weak points, which maybe were threaten by the evil power. However, there was always a beli

77、ef</p><p>　　From this plot, it is not hard to see that kinship is a very staple feature that the director want show to the viewer. Meanwhile, the director may also like to tell the audience that heroes also

78、are normal people at some time. They also need the care from family and support from the friends. Maybe that is the reason that kinship as a clear feature was put in this movie. </p><p>　　Conclusion</p>

79、;<p>　　Individual heroism is a cultural phenomenon praised highly by Americans and also is one of the traditional main values in America. Although it was not accepted by everyone, there’s one point that cannot be

80、denied that it has became a relatively mature after continuous developments and changes. Meanwhile, as a mainstream cultural value of a country, it needs platform to transform to the citizens and persuade them to approve
