2、hingwill certainly supersede traditional publishing to a greatextent,and in the future it is said the major products of theprinting industry will be packaging and custom-designed paperproducts.The likelihood my private l

3、ibrary will be replaced bya drive full of bland digital stuff seems quite a bleak prospect tome.We Chinese intellectu</p><p>  Printing has been a necessary aspectof publishing and is usually seen asan impor

4、tant branch of the publish-ing industry.In ancient times when,without paper and a printing or inscrib-ing process,Chinese people wrote onbamboo strips,it was difficult for greatideas to spread fast and far.Indeed,theinve

5、ntion of paper and printing not onlyrevolutionized the spread of informationand ideas,but played an indispensablerole in the progress of human civiliza-tion and the transformation of social structures</p><p>

6、;  Thanks to my working relations with the publishing industry,I often have the opportunity to collaborate with various printinghouses,and my most unforgettable experience happened aroundthe Spring Festival of 2002.To ce

7、lebrate the 30th anniversaryof the formal establishment of diplomatic relations,we decidedto publish a photo album entitled Thirty Years ofSino-US Rela-tions,a brief sketch of all that transpired between the two coun-tri

8、es in the three decades before.Since there were many partiescon</p><p>  That evening in Shenzhen,the whole country was caughtup in the festivities,but I and a team of printers were alreadyhard at work.For s

9、everal days thereafter,all our hopes wereriding on the staff of the printing house and their modernprinting technology.My trust was not misplaced.When I tookthe freshly produced picture albums to Beijing on the eighth of

10、the first month of Chinese New Year,and witnessed President3iang Zemin make the presentation to President Bush the nextday,I felt so proud.See,how</p><p>  In recent years,I have been to a number of printing

11、 houses, most of them impressively well equipped.Like most book lov-ers,I often revel in the stunning and exquisite products of thepress,which include not only books and picture albums,butbeautiful packaging designs and

12、 reproductions of paintingsand Chinese calligraphies. </p><p>  Digital publishing is an irreversible trend,and we can donothing but embrace it and adapt ourselves to a new life style,or at least different r

13、eading habits.On the one hand,I cannothelp feeling sad for the gradual reduction of paper books,andon the other hand,I am fully aware of the fact that less printingmeans more trees and is an environment-friendly gesture

14、onman's part.It cannot be denied that embracing digital publish-ing is not only a matter of our adaptation to the new media buta must for</p><p>  But what about the real-life fallout? Statistics show th

15、at one of the impacts of the global financial tsunami in 2008 is that many indus- tries and enterprises are declining in performance,but China's packaging industry has maintained brisk growthagainst these odds.We hav

16、e quite mixed feelings about this phenom- enon.The good thing is that China's packaging industry is becoming in- creasingly globalized and customer- friendly.Beautiful packaging design has the charm to stimulate cons
