5、entcomftablesaferesidentialenvironment[1][2].Ingeneralthesmarthomeaimstoofferappropriateintelligentservicestoactivelyassistintheresident’slifesuchashousewkamusementrestsleep.Henceindertoenhancetheresident’sconveniencesaf
6、etydevicessuchashomeappliancesmultimediaappliancesinterappliancesshouldbeconnectedviaahomewksystemasshowninFig.1theyshouldbecontrolledmonitedremotelyusingatelevision(TV)personaldigitalassistant(PDA)[3][4].Alternativelyin
7、dolocationawaresystemscanbeclassifiedaccdingtotheneedfaterminalthatshouldbecarriedbytheresident.TerminalbasedmethodssuchasActiveBatsdonotrecognizetheresident’slocationdirectlybutperceivethelocationofadevicecarriedbythere
8、sidentsuchasaninfraredtransceiverradiofrequencyidentification(RFID)tag.Therefeitisimpossibletorecognizetheresident’slocationifhesheisnotcarryingthedevice.IncontrastnonterminalmethodssuchasEasyLivingSmartFlocanfindtheresi
9、dent’slocationwithoutsuchdevices.HoweverEasyLivingcanberegardedtoinvadetheresident’sprivacywhiletheSmartFlohasdifficultywithextendibilitymaintenance.Thispaperpresentsanonterminalbasedlocationawaresystemthatusesanarrayofp
10、yroelectricinfrared(PIR)senss[15][16].ThePIRsenssontheceilingdetectthepresenceofaresidentarelaidoutsothatdetectionareasofadjacentsenssoverlap.BycombiningtheoutputsofmultiplePIRsenssthesystemisabletolocatearesidentwithare
11、asonabledegreeofaccuracy.Thissystemhasinherentadvantageofnonterminalbasedmethodswhileavoidingprivacyextendibilitymaintenanceissues.Indertodemonstrateitsefficacyanexperimentaltestbedhasbeenconstructedtheproposedsystemhasb
12、eenevaluatedexperimentallyundervariousexperimentalconditions.Thispaperisganizedintofoursectionsincludingthisintroduction.SectionIIpresentsthearchitectureofthePIRsensbasedindolocationawaresystem(PILAS)thelocationrecogniti
13、onalgithm.SectionIIIdescribesaresidentdetectionmethodusingPIRsenssevaluatestheperfmanceofthesystemundervariousconditionsusinganexperimentaltestbed.FinallyasummarytheconclusionsarepresentedinSectionIV.II.ARCHITECTUREOFTHE
14、PIRSENSBASEDINDOLOCATIONAWARESYSTEMA.FramewkofthesmarthomeGiventheindoenvironmentofthesmarthomeanindolocationawaresystemmustsatisfythefollowingrequirements.Firstthelocationawaresystemshouldbeimplementedatarelativelylowco
